Protect Against Malaria with Mosquito Nets If you are travelling in a malarial zone, a mosquito net is vital. It is said that mosquitoes have killed more people than war. Literally bloodthirsty, they may be, but the real danger of mosquitoes lies in the infections and diseases they can pass between people. The elephantiasis-causing filariasis worm, Ross River Fever, various forms of encephalities and malaria can be transmitted by mosquitoes. Even today, between 1 and 3 million people die each year from malaria. Children are particularly vulnerable, due to their weaker immune systems. It is important to make sure you have the right size mosquito net for your bed. A variety of styles are available for single and double beds. Those mosuqito nets which require hanging (be it from a hook, wall or clothes lines) come with the necessary kit. Freestanding nets pop up like tents and can be used by those out camping or who don't have somewhere from which they can hang a traditional net. Of course, if you are off travelling then you may not always know where it is you are going to be staying. Compact mosquito nets are the answer. They are small enough to be carried in backpacks or hand luggage; the perfect choice for those off travelling the globe or trekking around Asia. It is the recommendation of the World Health Organisation that all those travelling within malarial zones take with them a mosquito nets impregnated with a strong insecticide. Long Lasting Impregnation (LLI) kills mosquitoes as soon as they land on the net. The treatment is good for 2 years and even then all that is needed for continued protection is a second, simple treatment. Reimpregnation is a simple process that can be carried out at home. Draw the net through a solution of the anti-mosquito treatment and leave to dry. Mosquitoes are active between dusk and dawn; hence the importance of mosquito nets. As well as a net, it's important to keep yourself covered if you are out and about at night, during the early morning or evening. You may be up and moving, but that won't stop them trying to bite. Head nets are made of a fine mesh that offers you clear vision while also keeping the mosquitoes off your face. Of course, mosquitoes can be a pest even if they are not carrying dangerous diseases. For that reason, some mosquito nets are available in non LLI versions which are suitable for using in the UK and other non malarial areas. If you're travelling in sub-Saharan Africa, Asia or the Americas, it's important you take a mosquito nets . Whether you are sleeping in a double bed in one hotel or trekking through the mountains, sleeping beneath the stars every night, there is a net suitable for your needs. Malaria is a horrible problem, but there are straightforward steps you can take to avoid the worst of it. | | 9:06 am |
Get Into the Fast Lane of the Information Superhighway Always having those annoying technological problems with your phone system or internet? Is swearing at your phone a daily occurence? Well, things get better. Data cabling equpiment and services can speed up your connection and reduce hitches. As time has passed since the entrance of the Internet, more and more of us are relying on its large array of uses and also expecting high quality speeds in order to not disrupt our busy schedules. People expect their Internet to be fast. Most online consultants will tell you that a website that takes longer than a second to load is going to get ignored. Fibre optic network cabling is taking the place of the old copper wires. With its faster connection speeds and greater carrying capacity, it is the fast lane. In practical terms, fibre optic data cabling carries information at greater speeds and without that data becoming lost or corrupted as quickly. Copper wire was designed for two voices: fibre optic is designed for the voice of the world. Fibre optic cables come in two different types to suit your internet needs, single mode and multi mode. A multi mode cable can transmit data up to lengths of 300m at 1000 mega bites per second and single mode cables can be used when even larger distances are needed! Half the problems come about due to ignorance; people don't know what type of cabling they should be buying when they set up their Internet connections. Most of us don't need a cable longer than 350m, so can make do with either a CAT5 or CAT5e. If you're going to need something above that, then you'd be better advised to invest in a CAT6 (up to 550m) or CAT7 (up to 1000m). Most people will opt for BT when setting up a new phone linebecause they are the most familiar. It's understandable; there are enough headaches when you are moving house or office and the fewer you make for yourself the better. However, did you know there are dozens of service providers all with offers, such as free installation, free call outs and often even cheaper rates? The types of phone systems businesses can choose from include the simple analogue/PSTN, a simple phone or fax line designed for receiving just one call at a time, ISDN2 - similar to the basic analogue line, only this can receive two calls as opposed to one. Alternatively there is the option of the ISDN30; often used for slightly larger businesses this system has a minimum of 8 channels and a maximum of 30. There are also a wide range of handsets to choose from. For instance, the new Toshiba Strata CIX40 is perfect for smaller or start up companies, featuring a state of the art voice mail system, with 360 mailboxes and 40 hours worth of storage, allowing businesses to present a highly professional image towards their clients, no matter what their size. | | Wednesday, December 7th, 2011 | | 10:53 pm |
Choosing a Curtain Pole for your Home A good curtain pole will transform the way your curtains hang, improving the look of your room. Purchasing a curtain pole may not be as simple as you first thought; they can vary from straight plastic poles with rings to a curtain track with automatic opening and closing on a light sensor. Curtain poles can be both manually operated and cord-operated, poles with rings or gliders, or even electronically operated for home protection and ease of use. Curtain rails are available in different materials and colours to complement a room; either coloured plastic, or wood or metal with a different finish (paint or varnish). Whichever material you use for your track or pole, it is important that it will support the weight of the curtains which will hang from them; it might be better to splash out on a top quality pole which will last for years. Corded tracks work differently to simple poles with rings as they allow the opening or closing of the curtains by pulling a nylon cord which works on a system of gliders and pulleys. This stops you needing to handle the curtain, which will shield delicate fabrics from damage. Pull-cord openings are also practical if the curtains are particularly tall and difficult to manage. Investing in a spray-lubricant will make sure that the tracks work as efficiently as poles with rings. Electronically operated curtains are an alternative to manually operated poles with rings or cord-operated curtains, but are more expensive. They offer similar advantages as corded tracks, but can be remotely operated by a controller, light sensor or timer. The latter two enable the opening and closing of the curtains when nobody is in the property, adding to home security. Whichever style of curtain pole you choose it is important to ensure the size and shape are right. Curtain rails come in different sizes, so measuring the window area is essential. Measure the recess width of the window with a metal tape measure, and note the number down. Also choose the number of centimetres you will need either side of the window for when your curtains are open, you will need this so the curtains do not restrict daylight once open. The number is usually around 15cm to 20cm on each side, but should be more for wider or thicker curtains. Add two times this width (once for each side) to the width of the window to get a total. This will give you the minimum length required for your new curtain rail. Extra wide windows will need multiple rails attached together by a joiner or good curtain rail retailer. Bay windows are all different shapes and sizes, meaning that measuring is more difficult. You will need to add the depth of your bay to the total length of the rail, but it is very likely that the rail will need to be adjusted to measure by the retailer, or, if you are handy, bent and cut at home. You can give poles with rings a number of unique features to add to the look of the room. Finials and midials can be bought in different materials and effects to complete the look of your window, as can curtain ties or hold-backs. | | Monday, December 5th, 2011 | | 12:05 am |

Training for Manual Handling As an employer, you would be mad not to make sure your employees undertake manual handling training. And it's not just because you don't want to be taken down the court bya disgruntled employee who has crushed his toe under a heavy box. Poor manual handling leads to more long term time off work than any other single cause. That’s a lot of sick pay and a lot of work that has to be covered. Manual handling at work training offer you not just coaching, but context. The presentations begin by explaining the way your back functions, so you can better understand how and why inadequate manual handling risks it. Description is combined with stories from back specialists and those that have injured their backs through poor manual handling. The training then begins at the beginning. Before doing anything else, you need to assess the problem and the solution. You will be taught what you need to check, what you need to think about and which questions you need to be asking yourself before you carry out any form of manual handling. Each and every step of manual handling is explained to you, so that hopefully there are no gaps left in your knowledge. Manual handling at work may take many forms. The course delivers advice and demonstrates the exact concerns of each one. If you're lifting a huge box down from height then you've got to ensure that you don’t drop it and crush yourself, whilst also ensuring taking the strain of the weight does not lead to problems for your back. Other kinds of manual handling which are discussed include lifting from floor, waist and shoulder height, team lifts, pushing and pulling. Each section of the training programme is followed by a 20 minute test to check each individual understands the subject. A certificate can be printed off as proof that each person has completed their manual handling course. Whether at home, work or play, it's important to understand proper manual handling. It’s not just at work that we move things. Plenty of day-to-day activities can be fraught with the danger of back injury if carried out incorrectly. Carrying a pet, emptying the wardrobe, pushing a car on a cold morning. They all carry the same risks associated with manual handling. The manual handling at work training course only takes thirty minutes to finish and can be conducted on the web or on CD-ROM. A free trial is offered with no necessity for credit card details; this means you are free just to walk away if it’s not for you. But before you do, just take into account the time, money and spines that may be saved if just a little time is invested in making certain you know what you're doing. | | Friday, November 18th, 2011 | | 10:07 pm |
Travel on a Safe Tummy What are the best methods for treating drinking water abroad? This is a very common question amongst travellers who may not have access to clean drinking or bottled water. Boiling water is a great method, but not always practical. Here we look at alternatives to boiling water. Chlorine dioxide tablets are probably the safest and most effective chemical water disinfectants around. They kill bacteria, viruses and cysts in water (including giardia and cryptosporidium). As well as drinking water, it is important to treat any water which may enter your body, e.g. water used for brushing your teeth or preparing food. There is no need for neutralising tablets as chlorine dioxide tablets don't have any taste. The tablets can be used to treat up to 30 litres of water and are safe for long term use. Until recently, iodine was the most commonly known and commonly employed water purification treatments. Although proven to be very effective and safe, iodine is unfortunately not being supported under the EU Biocides Directive. For this reason most manufacturers have discontinued supplying iodine products since 2009. We now recommend using chlorine dioxide tablets; a great alternative. If you are not limited with space, try the handy Aquapure Traveller portable water purifier bottle. It utilises the latest M.A.D. (Mechanically Advanced Disinfection) Technology, a chemical free system that not only does a much better job than the original product, but also has a faster flow rate: all without chemicals. The bottle is designed to provide safe drinking water that tastes fantastic. Its filter cap will purify about 350 litres during its lifetime, and is the only portable water purifier endorsed by the Hospital of Tropical Diseases London. It is environmentally friendly; by using the Aquapure Traveller, you are helping the environment by not disposing of 700 plastic bottles per filter. It is simple to use. There are no chemicals or complicated produces; you just fill it and drink. Aquapure Traveller removes bacteria and viruses such as E. Coli, polio, hepatitis A and others. It removes waterborne pathogens, such as giardia, cryptosporidium, etc. It eliminates toxic chemicals and heavy metals, together with bad tastes, odours and sediment. It is the perfect solution for holiday makers, backpackers, trekkers, business travellers and, , anybody who needs access to pure, fresh water anywhere in the world. Replacement filters are available and can be replaced by simply taking off the old cap and screwing on a brand new one. Bimuno Travelaid helps keep your tummy in good health while abroad. This exceptional patented formula has been specially developed for travellers by specialists in digestive health. Medical studies suggest that the unique second generation prebiotic galacto-oligosaccharide formulation of Bimuno Travelaid helps to encourage and sustain a normal level of your gut’s “good” bacteria (bifidobacteria) preventing “bad bacteria” from becoming established. Furthermore, unlike other prebiotics, it also has unique anti-adhesive properties, which help your body to drive out “bad” bacteria you might have consumed. By this combined effect of maintaining a favourable balance of “good” bacteria and preventing bad bacteria from finding a home you can keep your tummy happy on its travels. Since the protective benefits of Travelaid build over time, it is recommended that you take the product for a week before your departure and each day whilst you are on your travels. Because of its effectiveness, Travelaid is recommended by numerous travel clinicians and Bimuno is an approved travel industry partner of ABTA. I hope you found this article about Chlorine tablets for water purification interesting and informative. | | 5:47 pm |
Keeping You Surfing Even in a Crisis Fifteen years ago, most companies still didn't regularly use internet access. There were plenty of computers and networks, but large scale e-commerce was still a few years away. Those who did have it had to put up with load times that often extended into the minutes and as for downloading audio or visual files, well... you might as well have driven to the server. Barely more than a decade later, things couldn't be any more different. There isn’t a business or event in the country that doesn’t rely on the exchange of information online in order to work efficiently. It can therefore cause a lot of problems if, for some reason, you don’t have access to the Internet. Fear not; there are a number of specialist IT firms out there which can provide you with temporary internet access with a variety of different options so you get the connection that matches your needs and budget. Maybe the internet has gone down in your office. For many businesses it’s the modern equivalent of the phone lines going down or the company fleet getting snowed in; no option but for everyone to down tools and wait until it all blows over. But with new times come new solutions. Specialist IT companies can now have a 7mbps connection set up in just a couple of hours or, if it is a longer term problem, 20 mbps in just 2 days. With such a quick turnaround, the impact on your business is minimised and the fiscal impact hopefully minimal. Temporary internet access can also serve as a stop gap if your company or organisation is moving between offices. Sorting out an internet landline can be an infamous headache. Again, for every minute that isn’t sorted out, your business is losing money and being frustrated. Temporary internet access fills that gap, keeping you supplied with an internet connection that is perfectly capable of keeping up with the demands of a busy office. The users of temporary internet access are not just corporate. In these days of Wi-Fi hotspots and 3G mobile reception, people are used to the idea of being able to access the internet whenever and wherever they are. In busy metropolitan areas such as London, this isn’t really a problem, but out in the countryside even reception can be weak or entirely absent. Temporary internet access is therefore a popular solution amongst those organising events in rural areas, e.g. literary or music festivals. At such events, there are journalists who will obviously need access to the internet in order to send in their copy and conduct their research; after all, what’s the point of organising an event if no one is talking about it? However, internet access is also useful for those running the events as social media is an increasingly popular way for event organisers to interact with their attendees. Temporary internet access can be used to supplement existing 3G and Wi-Fi signals with a bandwidth that is sufficient for your customers’ requirements. The internet is a vitally important part of the modern world. Yes, we once did without it, but the digital revolution has changed the way our society works: and changed it for the better. Whether it’s an emergency job that needs doing with only two hours notice or a major event with two or three months’ lead-in, there are specialist IT companies out there who can help. | | Thursday, November 17th, 2011 | | 2:01 pm |
Pest Problems in Autumn and Winter Weather It’s getting late in the year, it’s wintry outside and we’re disappearing inside for heat. And we’re not necessarily the only ones. Insects and pests are more readily associated with the milder weather of summer, but it’s when it gets cold that many of the problems begin. Mice, rats and even some insects want to stay warm and your nice, comfortable, centrally heated house is just the kind of place to find it. Rodent infestations increase dramatically in the autumn and winter months, and contrary to popular belief they can happen in both towns and the countryside. Rats and mice are attracted to sources of food as much as warmth and the vast quantities of waste present in cities and towns such as London mean there is certainly plenty on offer for them there. A simple way to lower the probability of infestation is to be certain your trash isn’t left out for days on end or otherwise is placed in a secure rubbish bin. If not, the mice will discover it, start breeding and you might quickly find a rodent infestation on your hands. Rodents have a sense of smell many times as strong as a human being's. Like many animals, odours are vital to their survival, since they use their urine to mark out territory, objects and paths. One can deter rodents by laying down strong odours. Mothballs are a basic and effective choice, though the strong odour may well become unpleasant for we human beings too. Thus it’s a solution best suited to out-of-the way areas which are liable to infestation, such as attics, cellars and outbuildings as well as caravans and campers which might end up being left uninhabited in the winter months. Wasps are typically a summer problem, but the recent warm weather means that many wasps are remaining active significantly longer than is usual. Those nests which remain outside will be unlikely to survive the first frost, but those inside - hidden away in attics, sheds or barns - might make it through into October and early November. The new queen will normally have left the nest after the summer, but those wasps left behind continue to look for food. Like a lot of us, they can get a bit tipsy as Christmas draws near, as often the only food available is rotting fruit that has begun to ferment. Alas, many wasps may be at their most dangerous at this time of year; because the hunt for food gets ever more difficult, the insects can become aggressive. Like rats and mice you can lower your chances of attracting wasps by not leaving food out for longer than is necessary. If there are only a couple of wasps about, a trap could be sufficient to deal with them, but the best method is to simply wait for them to fly away. Winter brings its very own problems when it comes to pests, but to be informed is to be prepared. There are numerous small, preventative steps you can take to ward off pest infestations, but be aware that dealing with an established colony head on is a problem best left to the professionals. And remember, it might not just be you who’s keeping warm in your home this winter. Expert, friendly and effective Pest control London for pest infestations can be supplied by the London-based firm Terminex, a fully certified member of the British Pest Control Association. They provide numerous commercial and household services for dealing with unwanted infestations all year long. | | Wednesday, November 16th, 2011 | | 6:40 pm |

How Should I Deal With Pimples? Acne isn’t necessarily something that goes away when you become an adult. Most girls will get spots when they are 17 or 18 and most boys when they are 19 or 20, but it is very common and perfectly normal for spots to continue to form after these ages. Once we understand what is happening to your skin that is causing spots to form, it is easier to see why natural Acne face care products are the best treatment. Sebum acts as the body’s natural moisturiser, ensuring our skin does not become dry, cracked and painful. During puberty, high levels of hormones are released into our bodies. Amongst these is testosterone, a male-type sex hormone that is found in both men and women. Testosterone causes the sebaceous glands that produce sebum to enlarge and overproduce the substance. Men are understandably more prone to acne as their bodies contain higher levels of testosterone This excess sebum mixes with dead skin cells and congeals in the pores of our skin. This is what is commonly called a “blackhead” and doesn’t mean one is unclean; the dark colour of the blackhead is caused by skin pigment, not dirt. If one has a blackhead, careful squeezing of the area can remove the sebum plug and allow the pore to drain before infection sets in. One must, however, be careful not to damage or irritate the surrounding skin as this can result in permanent scarring and/or further over production of sebum. This flood of hormones can also cause our skin to swell up and thus constrict the opening of the pores. Bacteria that normally exists safely on the surface of our skin thrive in these airless pockets. Pus builds up as the body sends in white blood cells to fight off the infection. With whiteheads, the best advice is simply to let them be. Your body will deal with them in its own time and do so without causing irritation or scarring... Of course, it’s not always that simple is it? A tiny little white bump we can deal with, but many find it embarrassing to walk around with a huge great whitehead in the middle of their forehead. If you really must pop it, then make sure the whitehead is fully formed before attempting to do so (i.e. when the skin is white, soft and supple). Use a sterilised needle to create a small hole in the spot and then gently push in and down. This should minimise scarring and irritation. Many of us will have heard the old advice that scrubbing your face too hard can actually increase the chances of spots forming. Unlike so many old wives’ tales, this one is actually true. The harshest cleaning regimes may feel like they do the most good, but they can cause major irritation of the skin. Though it can cause problems, your skin needs sebum and its natural reaction to having it removed is to produce more. Many high street acne face care products cause the same trouble. Some contain petrochemicals - which prevent the skin from breathing - and harsh cleaning products - which cause irritation and provoke a defensive reaction from your skin. Natural and organic Acne face care products equalise our body's production of sebum. Deep cleansing masks clear out the pores and remove dirt. Some of the treatments are multipurpose, both concealing and tackling blackheads and whiteheads. Acne is a natural part of life and nothing to be embarrassed about. If, however, you want to take some steps to try and minimise your outbreaks, make sure you use the right acne face care products. | | 10:06 am |
Protect Your Car You can be proud of a new car. You can take pride in its soft leather seats, the shine of its paintwork and the gleaming alloys. Pity it never stays like that, eh? Let the kids, dog or - let’s face it - adults loose on your back seat and there’ll soon be spilt juice or coffee all over the place, brake dust building up on the alloys and grime around the edges of the windscreen. Unless you’re going to put your car in for a regular and pretty deep valet - and how much is that going to cost? - there’s not much you can really do about it. Only, now there is. Autoglym LifeShine creates a protective layer around the interior and exterior of your car. Not only will the process protect your car for the length of your ownership, it will also help it retain much of its value. We’ve all heard the saying that a car plummets in value the moment it leaves the showroom, but much of the vehicle’s resale value is based on its cosmetic condition. Autoglym protects against the myriad smudges, marks and stains that make a car appear old before its time. The Autoglym LifeShine process is available to 70% of the UK population. Fully trained technicians will travel to meet you and can carry out the protection process on site. They will bring with them everything they need, including water, products, an electricity supply and a maintenance marquee so they can work on your car no matter what the weather. The process is only currently available in the UK and Ireland through fully authorised ownerships, so you can rest assured that you are paying for a quality service. First, your car has to be prepared for the process. This means thoroughly cleaning the vehicle to remove any pre-existing dirt and tar spots. Although car protection is most commonly applied to new cars before they leave the showroom, this section of the treatment is most important on nearly new and used cars, as they are obviously more likely to have amassed some dirt. If necessary, any contaminants (e.g. engine oil) are removed with a clay bar and lubricants. The interior of the car is similarly cleaned and vacuumed, and any pre-existing stains or marks removed (we wouldn’t want to be locking in the very things we are trying to prevent). LifeShine provides your car’s paintwork with an invisible protective layer. As well as protecting your paintwork from even the harshest of weather - it offers protection against acid rain, and industrial fallout and dirt - the coating brightens your car’s shine. Interior Design: The Secret to a Successful Restaurant Many people fail to consider interior design when running their restaurant. Restaurant interior design must consider the needs of its staff and customers as they move about, as much as it must evidence some individual character. Price, value, location, service and, of course, the food are all areas which restaurateurs must optimise if they are to make back their (often considerable) investment. There isn’t a restaurant owner in the land who doesn’t work carefully to ensure their food is of the very best quality. They wouldn’t dream of opening their doors if they didn’t think their service was suitable for the area in which they were situated. It’s surprising, then, the number who think that restaurant interior design is a low priority. The food must be good and the price right, but it won’t matter if people don’t want to be IN your restaurant or, worse, if the layout of your restaurant is such that bottle necks are constantly forming, waiting staff cannot get between tables easily or the noise from the hand dryers in the toilets drowns out conversation. The first thing a restaurant interior designer will do when hired to design or redesign your restaurant is to consider the ergonomics of the place. This means to create a layout which is suitable for human use as this will lead to efficient operation. Restaurants are commonly and necessarily located in prime retail locations, meaning that space is limited. If the layout of your restaurant does not take this into account, then the results can be disastrous. If waiting staff have to squeeze between tables or if they have to pass through the same gap in order to reach a number of tables, accidents are likely to happen. Staff could collide, guests might shift their chairs out suddenly, etc. Good, ergonomic restaurant interior design will ensure that the distance a waiter or waitress has to carry plates is as small as possible. In multi-layered restaurants, a good old fashioned dumb waiter prevents staff having to carry trays up and down stairs. Many restaurants are designed to ensure there are multiple paths for waiting staff to take to most tables, so the chances of collisions or staff have to queue are reduced Even if you already have an existing property, it's worth considering how restaurant interior design can help you. Are there any small, but niggly problems that you have noticed with the operation of your restaurant's layout? Perhaps it just needs a spruce up: something to give it a new lease of life. It is the design that makes a great restaurant as much as the area in which you have to work; the Ivy is down a relatively minor side street and yet is one of London’s most exclusive places to dine. People like to feel they're eating somewhere special. Unless you want your restaurant to look like a McBurger outlet, then its interior design has to have somethingt that marks it out as unique. In extreme cases, one can end up with restaurants such as New York’s famous BED (now closed), where diners ate reclined on four poster beds. More commonly, this can mean carefully thought out design choices which reflect some internally consistent thought. However large or small your restaurant, it has to be attractive. Food tastes better when people are enjoying themselves. Great design means yours isn’t just a great restaurant; it’s a destination. | | Tuesday, November 8th, 2011 | | 6:45 pm |

The History of the Eames Office Chair Sixty years ago, Charles and Ray Eames designed their iconic office chair as a seat suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. It's use of synthetic mesh to bear the sitter's weight was a technical innovation. Today, the Eameses’ iconic design has inspired a whole range of comfortable and stylish office chairs. Charles and Ray Eames remain amongst the greatest designers of the modern era. True polymaths, they created groundbreaking films, buildings and textiles. In furniture, they produced iconic designs that combined sleek aesthetics, major technical achievements and, above all else, comfort. Many designers have since taken their iconic work as inspiration, spinning all sorts of stylish, innovative and comfortable chairs. Amongst the Eameses' most famous designs was the Aluminium Group, commonly known these days as Eames office chairs. The Eames office chair has its roots in Columbia, Indiana in the 1950s. The Miller House is now a National Historic Landmark, but in the mid-1950s it was a building site. The house was to be the epitome of modern design and its interior uncluttered, but homely. Girard was a long time collaborator of the Eameses and asked them to design high-quality seating that could be used both inside and outside the house. What they delivered was groundbreaking. They constructed the seat frame from cast aluminium, making it lightweight but strong. The Eames chair could be moved about with ease and wouldn’t be easily damaged. The frame was designed to support a stretched synthetic mesh. The material was secure, but fitted loosely enough that it could conform to the body of anyone sitting in it. This mesh was not a standard cover for the seat, but an integral, load bearing part of the chair’s design. This form of seat suspension was a major technical breakthrough, throwing out the rulebook that had existed since the Ancient Greeks which said chairs should be a solid shell. The potential of this Eames chair was quickly realised. The Miller House was completed in 1957 and in 1958 the chair was released to the mass market as the Aluminium Group and has been on sale ever since. Times and circumstances move on and the design has seen some notable changes over the years. Nowadays the chairs are used almost exclusively indoors and have become associated with corporate environments such as offices, boardrooms and the like: hence the unofficial title “the Eames office
chair”. To accommodate this change of environment, the original synthetic mesh was removed. It was designed for outdoor use and its removal allowed a wider variety of fabrics and upholstery to be fitted. New fittings have included different, more modern forms of mesh, fabric upholstery and, perhaps most famously, black padded leather. Nowadays, the Eames’s legacy lives on in a range of chairs inspired by the Eames office chair. These new designs borrow many of the chair’s key features while continuing the process of innovation that the original designers so valued. In describing his design philosophy, Charles Eames used the parable of a banana leaf; used as a simple dish in southern India, the banana leaf was gradually made more and more ornate, until some finally returned to just using the simple leaf. "I'm not prepared to say that the banana leaf that one eats off of is the same as the other eats off of, but it's that process that has happened within the man that changes the banana leaf".This philosophy of returning to and recognising the elegance of simplicity can be seen in the designs the Eames have inspired. | | 11:29 am |

A Short Review of Temporary Internet Solutions Ever since the creation of Internet, there has been an exponential increase in the users and how people use Internet for various purposes. Imagining a day without Internet connection seems impossible in the modern world. However, there are various situations where absence of Internet access due to any reason can cause a huge amount of trouble. Especially in disaster situations, breakdowns and data loss, agencies and organisations need to talk to others to overcome the situation. We can't ignore the value of Internet connection while arranging various events .Here comes the importance of temporary Internet solution. Whether it is an on-site or offsite requirement, the temporary Internet service will help keep the network systems running for organisations, enterprises, and government agencies, where every second crucial amount of data is created and distributed. There are companies out there which provide temporary internet solutions for businesses and events where quick Internet connection is required. Some of the highlights of temporary Internet that such companies supply include a very quick setup of 3G routers which comes pre-configured. We simply need to plug it and stay connected to get good results. On top of that,a7mbps connection is supplied within 2 hours. It will take 2 days to deliver more bandwidth like 20mbps.As mentioned above, these companies aim to provide temporary Internet in various situations and events. These events can differ but the bottom line is that fast Internet access is needed. It can include in a breakdown of the network system of any organisation, or if they are moving offices, so temporary Internet services might be required in the new place where there are not that many facilities and conveniences to provide Internet cables and wires. Moreover, if any organisation is hosting an event but their own bandwidth is not sufficient enough, then temporary Internet services can help in this regard too. As fast as 20mbps can be provided in comparatively much faster time to provide connectivity for as many as 300 PCs. One special benefit of recruiting such companies apart from the quick and temporary Internet solutions is that managing and bringing the accessories for the connectivity is also done by the company. Main factor is to recruit them according to your needs and budget because they have different terms and options for all sorts of events and businesses. Some of the equipment that is available for hiring for various events includes computers, laptops, servers, 3G routers, switches, printers, and Internet telephones. There are companies out there that present the services of temporary internet solutions to the events industry for conferences, exhibitions, outdoor events, sporting, international construction sites and historic buildings and stately homes. | | 12:04 pm |
Protect Your Vehicle Against Winter It is important to make sure your car is protected at all times, but especially during the winter months. There are a variety of products available to protect your car’s paintwork, alloys, upholstery, chassis and cavities. Good general maintenace of your car is also important if it is to be kept in good working order through the harsher weather. Ensuring your car is well protected is important at all times. During the winter months, your vehicle is exposed to road salts, frost and the occasional sunny warm spells which can serve only to bake all the muck onto your paintwork. It’s essential therefore that adequate protection is in place to keep your car safe from the environmental onslaught. Clearly, road salting helps people travel safety, but it also has its drawbacks. The flying particles of grit can cause major damage to the bodywork and chassis of your vehicle, unless you take extra care and the right precautions. The interior of the car isn’t safe either, as muddy boots can bring all the salty, dirty slush inside and onto the carpets, mats and upholstery. You should protect the exterior of your car at the earliest opportunity and ideally before winter sets in. That way, your car is prepared for the winter months. The correct choice of products will give years of protection without the need for repeated waxing and polishing on an ongoing basis. It’s also worth considering protection for the chassis of older cars. Under body and cavity rust proofing is definitely worth doing. When choosing how to protect your car for the winter, there are a range of different solutions available, with different levels of full up care required. Some solutions require ongoing polishing (e.g. Autoglym Lifeshine), some require only a certain amount of aftercare treatments (e.g. Diamondbrite), while others require no ongoing maintenance whatsoever (e.g. Supagard). Some of these products come with warranties and guarantees of performance, ranging from three years to the lifetime of your ownership of the treated vehicle. Metalmate offers specialist warranted alloy wheel protection. Even with those services which require a degree of aftercare, it is still considerably less than relying on a simple wax and polish, which generally needs refreshing at least four times a year. Protecting the chassis and cavities of your car is a dirty job and definitely one best left to the determined DIY motorist. But don’t fear; a number of Waxoyl treatment specialists exist to help you with the job. Such treatments are common with off road vehicles like Land Rovers and Range Rovers, imported vehicles, and classic cars. It is, however, still important to do the cavities of other vehicles. Water can often get trapped in cavities: especially in the door, where trapped water will often fail to drain properly. The treatment will typically last up to 5 years, depending on what car you are treating. Protecting your car's aesthetics is all very well and good, but there are a number of other important factors you should consider in order to get to March; FLUIDS: Regularly check your car's oil, antifreeze and screen wash. In particular, a regular oil change is the simplest and most important element to keeping your engine running properly. PETROL: Always make sure you have plenty of fuel in your car because you never know when you might get held up or have to take a diversion. If there is a long trip you regularly do on a single tank, fill up before returning: it’s always important to have a contingency plan. TYRES: Recent studies have proven that good quality winter tyres provide better grip and performance at 6°C or below. If you decide you can't afford that expense, just making sure your tyres have plenty of tread makes a huge difference. VISIBILITY: Lights bulbs, wiper blades, de-misters, heated windows, etc all need to be in good working order if you are to ensure that you can see other cars properly and they can see you. BATTERY: With heaters, lights, de-misters and all the rest running, poor weather can mean you put a lot of demand on your car's battery. Make sure to have your battery tested, especially if it is more than 2 or 3 years old. A dead battery is one of the most common causes for cars failing to start during the winter. ESSENTIALS: Always be prepared! Bring a blanket, a torch, food, water, a first aid kit and a de-icer. It’s worth considering buying an Emergency Winter Survival kit. Ask an expert for a great car paint protection or vehicle paint protection. | | Sunday, November 6th, 2011 | | 4:12 pm |
Franchise, A New Road to Freedom There may be many reasons you may consider looking into franchise opportunities, perhaps you have grown sick and tired of the boring, daily grind and no longer what to be a part of the rat race or perhaps you aim to be your own boss and be in charge of your own future instead of having your future in the hands of somebody else. Another possibility is the enjoyment of going it alone and knowing that the franchise’s success lies entirely with you, the time and effort you put in and the commitment you show. What ever the explanations there are several franchise opportunities which give you freedom, the chance to take control of your life and the chance to earn a nice income. When searching for franchise opportunities you will find that each franchise is usually set over a fixed term with the option of renewing at the end of the term, if you are new to franchising or don’t feel ready for a major, long term commitment just yet then opt for one of the shorter term franchise opportunities to begin with so you can get a feel for the running of the business. When deciding on which of the many franchise opportunities to buy into there are several points you should take into account and naturally the first is affordability. If you have the funds readily available then great, but if you are aiming to sign up for a loan then you will have to factor this into your franchise revenue so weigh up the advantages and disadvantages and, even if the franchise that you originally had your eye on is no longer viable, it is more than probable that there are identical but less expensive franchise opportunities just around the corner. You will need to decide what you hope to gain from a franchise, and consider costs and outlay. Carry out the study, speak to current franchisees who can grant you the low down on the organization or find a respected company who deal only in legal or above board franchises and can supply a great variety of franchise opportunities. Your next step is to check out the appeal and uniqueness of the products or services you will provide from your prospective franchise. You will need to be marketing something that is in demand, popular and sought after.Stick with a product that you know is widely used in your sales area . It’s also worth remembering that the franchise you hope to be running won’t be your own business it will be a business investment. You will be buying the rights to use the company or brand logo and operational systems, not the actual business itself. Again it is wise to seek professional advice and use reputable sources, i.e. a highly reputable franchise website which will go through all the finer details with you and help you find excellent franchise opportunities that suit your needs. Other factors to take into account when thinking of buying into one of the franchise opportunities are the terms and conditions. Are they affordable and is it possible to adhere to them and still earn a reasonable living? You also need to study costs. Naturally the franchise is going to be the main outlay but you also need to add into the equation your training and support as well as the operation of the business. When opting for the franchise that you want you will need to devise a marketing plan. For instance, if you run a tools franchise you will be supplying businesses like garages, building companies, plumbers and private mechanics. Make sure that you have straightforward and sole access to all of the companies and trades people in your area and aim to build up a good relationship with them. It is comforting to know that there is a support system to guide you in the right direction. |
